There is a standing joke in my family that all the mistakes in raising a child are made on the first born. This is funnier of course, considering that I am the first born in my family. However the idea holds true in regards to Velcromagnon, my first born CD. There is a great art to recording, mixing and mastering music, and I am still always in the process of learning more about this. I was perhaps in too much haste in spitting out Velcromagnon; I wanted to get that first package completed, accomplish something. So I'd have to say all the mistakes one could make in mixing and mastering I made on old Velcromagnon. Some songs have bass, others don't, canned drums get old fast!. And there's plenty of sound collage on the CD, perhaps more than I intended. I think though, with it's defects, there are some good moments here and there. I used some samples from this old tape I digitized. The tape was recorded off of an album (borrowed from the public library) of the Georgia Sea Islanders, probably about twenty years ago. I never would have thought back then that I'd be using snippets of these soulful, plaintive songs in my own music. Namaste and Brother John are the tunes featuring these samples. There is definitely too much speedy guitar in Velcromagnon. There are segments I hear now that make me cringe, I think too many notes, man, too many notes. But it seemed like a good idea at the time! I must confess to being a recovering speed guitar addict (I'll explain more about this when I get to deconstructing shred).
